Selective Soldering
The A.C.E. Selective soldering systems have been developed to simplify the soldering process of attaching through hole electronic components onto printed circuit boards that also have surface mount components attached to the under side.
The compact solder pot has interchangeable drop in nozzles, is mounted on a precision X/Y axis control plus Z height movement with an over the top laser positioning system for easy alignment and pin point positioning of the solder joint. These compact systems can solder down to 1.5mm spacing between components. Available as table top, stand alone or inline. A.C.E Selective Soldering Systems ~ KISS (Keep It Simple Soldering).
Solderability Testing
Assembling electronic circuits involves joining components to circuit boards. The "glue" used to achieve this is a solder alloy and involves melting the alloy at high temperature and then cooling it. If the surface of either the component or the board becomes oxidised, even through improper storage, then this process results in defects that cost a huge amount of time and money to rectify - let alone compromising future reliability.
Consequently a reliable and repeatable measurement method was required and this gave rise to "solderability testing". The method uses a measurement of force in mN to determine the speed and extent of wetting and hence provide a go/no-go process control.
Lead-free soldering introduces new challenges in maintaining electronic product quality and reliability, and solderability testing is a proven quantitative method to help achieve this requirement.
MUST grandfathered this method and continues to set the standard by which others merely follow.
The MUST System
The MUST System 3 is the latest technological evolution of the original Multicore Universal Solderability Tester (MUST) that grandfathered all modern solderability test standards. It remains the unquestioned industry benchmark for solderability testing.
The MUST was originally developed by collaboration through an EU "Bright Project" together with NPL, Siemens and Philips. The NPL continue to assist in development of this test method.
Capable of measuring down to 0.001mN the MUST is THE most accurate and comprehensively equipped test system of its type in the world.
Gen3 Systems actively participates in standards development work with IEC, IPC, ISO, BSI and other official standards authorities to help maintain and develop solderability metrology.
The MUST 3 sets the standard - it performs solderability testing in accordance with all major international standards and comprises everything necessary for all forms of solderability tests.
AOI Inspection
Automatic Optical Inspection is the cost effective solution to replace traditional human inspection whilst at the same time reducing the need for expensive electrical test.
Marantz, well known from its high quality Audio / Video products developed its first AOI system for its own use in 1994 and is now the world leader in desk top solutions with an installed base of over 3,300 units.
The latest generation 22XDL systems incorporate a revolutionary new lighting concept with 3 pulse wave modulated LED light sources that can lighten inspection points from 3 different angles giving up to 6 different lighting combinations.
Using synthetic full colour imaging techniques, the inspection format associated with high-end equipment, the bench top Marantz systems offer full colour AOI inspection for devices ranging from the smallest chip 01005 to 0.3mm pitch QFP's.
Inspection parameters include checks for component presence, type, polarity, offset, text and solder joint quality for both volume and profile (meniscus) plus the option to inspect the printed solder paste image.
Spray Coating SB 2900
The model SB2900 has been specially designed for the application of conformal coatings to Printed Circuit Assemblies (PCAs) by batch spraying. It features an ergonomic design to minimise operator fatigue, while providing greater control of the spray gun position and direction. This limits overspray and unnecessary material wastage.
The SB2900 can be equipped with explosion-proof UV light and/or white light and employs a hands-free, rotating table for total 360° visual inspection.
The spray chamber also has a restricted opening and downward extraction plenum chamber, thus limiting operator exposure to solvent vapour. To ensure optimum filtration efficiency, the primary, secondary and tertiary filters are all easily replaceable.
A standard 10 litre pressure pot feed system can be supplied with pre-blended material to minimise filling downtime, along with semiautomatic purging and cleaning of the sprayhead.
An integrated storage space beneath the booth is provided for material and purging solvent pressure pots, the spray gun and face masks, etc.
The SB2900 is specifically designed to work with highly flammable materials.
Batch Cleaning
NC 25
MB Tech Conveyorised Batch cleaning machines and Automatic Stencil cleaners.
The systems have been designed to use Microphase liquids like Vigon* in a closed loop configuration and using a patented filtering system that offers optimum performance with minimum waste and hence reduced operating costs.
The Batch Cleaner NC25 utilises a vacuum drying module that ensures thorough drying.
Auto SIR Testing
The AutoSIR represents the latest technology in automated precision Surface Insulation Resistance (SIR) testing.
The system was developed by Gen3 Systems (formerly Concoat Systems) in collaboration with the world-renowned British National Physical Laboratory (NPL). It is used to conduct tests in both SIR and CAF (Cathodic [Conductive] Anodic Filamentation) investigations.
AutoSIR was used in the early research of these measurement techniques and in the International Standard developments. It is in use with many leading research and commercial laboratories around the world as well as many major electronic manufacturing groups.
SIR and CAF Testing
Both Surface Insulation Resistance (SIR) and Conductive [Cathodic] Anodic Filamentation (CAF) test techniques are relatively new methods to determine product reliability in the field.
SIR, although in use for over 40 years for materials characterisation, has now been evolved into an accurate and quantitative method to predict circuit reliability from an electro-chemical standpoint. It is now being used to characterise the manufacturing (assembly) process. It is carried out on a representative coupon (test vehicle)
under temperature and humidity to determine if there are any adverse surface insulation reactions that would affect reliability long term.
Curiously, science research carried out by NPL, et al, proved that lower voltage and narrower conductor spacing increased the susceptibility of electro-chemical failure. AutoSIR can measure all of these effects at levels down to 1014 Ohms.
CAF is a reliability issue involving sub-surface dendrites. As such it is used to determine the manufactured quality, and likely reliability, of circuit boards. AutoSIR is able to measure these influences accurately and reliably.
Cleanliness Testing
Although commonly referred to "Cleanliness Testing" it is in fact a measurement of ionic contamination. This test method has, for over 40 years, been acknowledged as an important Quality Assurance and Process Control tool in the manufacture of electronic circuit boards, components and assemblies.
The Contaminometer (CM Series) test systems were originally developed by Protonique, the business of industry guru Brian Ellis. They also featured in the early development programmes of "cleanliness measurement" carried out by the US Department of Defense at China Lake in the 1970s.
IPC-J-STD001 requires that assemblies be cleaned to a value of <1.5µg/cm2 of NaCl equivalence.
The CM Series utilise a solid gold measuring cell, ballistic amplifier and a vigorous pumping system to achieve superior measurement accuracy of <0.005mS/cm even at very low conductivity values. The CM Systems have been designed to avoid polarisation effects between electrodes as might occur when using DC test currents.
CONTAMINOMETERS from Gen3 Systems come in 4 different models and 4 different tank sizes because when selecting a Test System, it is important to use the smallest possible tank size for the circuit under test.

Contaminometers are used to measure the amount of ionic contamination, usually referred to as cleanliness level, in accordance with IPC/ANSI-J-STD001 and UK DEF-STD and other international specifications. The instruments are also commonly referred to as ROSE (Resistivity Of Solvent Extracted) or SEC (Solvent Extract Conductivity) testers.

Solder Paste Analysis
The SPA 1000 Solder Paste Analyser
A unique six-in-one test system used to characterise solder paste in compliance with both IPC and IEC Standards.
The SPA 1000 also introduces new process control capability by accurately measuring the suitability of the solder paste prior to its implementation on the production line. It achieves this by determining the "Open-Time" for the paste. It also performs the Slump Test and both of these methods provide a "Go/No Go" answer in less than 30 minutes to ensure minimum delay for the production line.
NEW Process Control Test Methods Solder Paste Standard is available in the members area of SMART Group web site:

quoting document reference SGPCT01.
Dip Coating
Dip coating is the most effective method of applying a conformal coating whether in terms of efficiency, productivity or cost. High volume manufacturers design their assemblies so that any component that should not be coated (e.g. connectors, trimmers, presets, switches) are located on one side of the assembly.
Our systems are not limited to conformal coating applications but to any other coating material.
This includes, for example, applying special surface coatings to photo-voltaic cells, LCD panels, glass panels and solar cells.
This is all possible because our systems feature, as standard, a unique Oleo-pneumatic circuit that permits unparalleled precision. The regulated speed control is able to operate down to speeds of less than 1mm/minute, and apply coatings down to just to 200nm in thickness over the entire coating stroke to ±3% accuracy
Stencil Cleaning - Gensonic
Our NEW Gensonic Stencil Cleaning system uses a 40kHz on-contact ultrasonic transducer for high efficiency cleaning of stencil apertures.
The Gensonic can be used either in conjunction with our Stencil Cleaning Centres or portable enough to be taken directly to the printer.
Designed, Developed and Manufactured by Gen3 Systems in the UK at a price you won't believe.
Stencil Cleaning - N 29
The Stencil Cleaner NC29 is a space efficient unit that requires only a 13amp power connection and requires minimum maintenance.
UV Optical Inspection
The Mantis® UV Optical Inspection System has been developed to enhance the quality control and inspection of conformally coated electronic assemblies.
The specifications MIL-l-46058C, IPC-CC-830 Def.Std 59/47 issue 4 and IEC 1086 require that all inspection be performed at x10 magnification. Furthermore, optical inspection is required for non-conforming defects including: voids, bubbles, adhesion loss, dewetting, ripples, fisheyes, orange peel or foreign material that can expose circuitry or bridge lands and other adjacent conductive surfaces.
The Mantis® UV Optical Inspection System provides superb stereo vision even for wearers of glasses and contact lenses. It has a large field of view and extensive depth of field. It is also equipped with switchable UV and white light for versatile applications.
