Roofing

Roofing can be self-supporting but it is generally supported by an underlying structure. As the main purpose of the roof is to protect the building and its inhabitants from the elements, it is often placed on top of underlayment, which is a secondary layer made of water-resistant materials. For the same reasons, roofing also has a system of guttering or drainpipes to protect from damage caused by rain. Roofs can be flat or pitched and which to choose is made for reasons of functionality and aesthetics. Shingled roofing consists of overlapping materials and can be made of wood, slate, asphalt, metal or rubber. Other common roofing materials or ceramic tiles or metal (such as corrugated galvanised iron.) Membrane roofing is large sheets which are fused together and common materials include thermoplastics and asphalt roll. Various kinds of structural concrete are often used for flat roofing. Whatever the size or purpose of the building, all structures need roofs. The materials chosen would depend on traditional roofing styles, the materials available, their durability, cost and structural elements (how the space underneath is bridged.) The dangers of roofing means it is less likely to be done by the homeowner.
