How do we select the right industrial silencers?
1 September 2023Spending too long in a noisy industrial setting isn’t good for our health. Knowing this, employers need to have the right measures in place so people are safe. We’re talking about installing industrial silencers. There are various models, including in-line, vent, and discharge. Ventx can design them all, creating bespoke ones for each client.
Industrial mufflers and silencers attenuate and absorb noise from machinery and different sources. They do so for regulatory compliance and to improve performance. The mechanisms use several basic designs.
Different designs
Mufflers and absorptive silencers use sound-deadening substances, compounds, and fabric. As a result, they absorb the sound energy coming from air or gas flow.
Reactive mufflers and silencers use complex passages and/or chambers for noise attenuation optimisation. At the same time, they preserve application requirements such as airflow and pressure drop.
Hybrid designs make use of reactive and absorptive features. They combine acoustic materials and airflow path management so they can minimise noise.
Active noise cancellation devices use sound sensors. They do so to characterise the noise-cancelling speakers and sound profile to generate sound 180º out of phase with the airflow sound.
An analysis
Choosing industrial silencers, whether in-line or other models, demands an analysis of three things. These are mounting attachments, performance specifications, and physical specifications.
Mounting attachments include pipe clamps, flanges, female threads, and male threads. You need to select the right one to ensure the silencer will remain in place.
Physical specs include outlet and inlet size. Some installations possess an oval, circular, or round cross section. Others are rectangular or square. The silencer must be the same shape or it won’t fit.
Performance specs include maximum flow rating, pressure rating, and noise attenuation. We measure noise in decibels (dB) and then express it as a performance curve over the audible frequency range. For pressure, we measure in pounds per square inch. Finally, we measure flow in standard cubic feet per minute.
Apps
To finish, let’s go over some applications for the silencers. One is a pressure relief valve silencer. They lower noise from blow offs. Another is a turbine silencer. They offer attenuation on the outlet and/or inlet port of turbines. As for a vacuum pump silencer, they lower noise at the outlet and/or inlet of pumps. Last on our list is a chimney silencer. They are specifically for combustion exhausts, like industrial furnaces and ovens.
