Balances
Balances are measuring devices for instruments used to determine mass or weight. They are important in laboratories because they show the outcome or result of a process or test. Accuracy or precision is vital especially when working with small traces of elements or compounds. Balances should be calibrated regularly to make sure they are giving accurate readings. There are a variety of balances used in laboratories. The first is the beam balance which uses a comparative technical in the form of a beam from which a weighing pan or scale is suspended. Four-beam and triple-beam versions are also available. The analytical balance offers greater precision and consists of a see-through enclosure with doors so dust does not collect or air currents affect the delicate balance. The two-pan balance is made up of a symmetrical beam which acts as a pivot. The electronic single-pan uses an electromagnetic force compensation unit for measuring. The micro balance is suitable for smaller amounts and can contain a quartz crystal. Balances are essential pieces of equipment in both educational and research laboratories. They are equally vital for testing the batch consistency of formulas and quality control in industry since errors in measurements cannot be allowed.
