  1. How Does a Flow Screed Pump Work?
    31 January 2023

Flow Screed pumps are a machine of the moment as contractors switch from back-breaking traditional screed to an easier method of working which achieves fantastic level, even and smooth flooring surfaces. Rapid pour Liquid Flow Screed has many benefits including it’s compatibility with a range of floor finishes, time-saving, labour-saving and increase in productivity. Find out more about the benefits of using liquid flow screed here >

    Safety First

As with any machine, it is important to draw the users attention to the manual and pay close attention to the safety points. Accidents and injuries often happen due to ignoring safety standards so always invest the time reading and understanding the safety guidelines. A more detailed run through of safety protocol when operating a liquid flow screed pump can be found here >

    Pre-use Checks

The actual operation of a flow screed pump is pretty simple and there are arguably more steps to remember in your preparation as opposed to the running of the machine. It’s well worth checking out this blog which gives you top tips for getting started with latex or flow screed > . Before you begin pumping follow these steps (all machines are different and these steps refer to our Euromair X-Pro D140):

    • Check the hydraulic and engine oil levels

    • Ensure there are no objects in the hopper (e.g. a rogue trowel or spanner)

    • Ensure machine stability by lowering/raising the jockey wheel or placing onto legs if they are fitted

    • Unlock the emergency stop button on the hood

    Time to Pump

At CES, 20 metres of hose is supplied as standard which generally achieves the best results. However sometimes you may need more to suit your project. With more hose you might discover the flow rate reduces as the pressure in the hoses drops so appropriate adjustments should be made. Before firing up the machine, you should also be aware never to use incorrect fuel (in this case with a diesel machine, stay away from petrol) and also never to run the pump without water. Now it’s time to pump. With a machine like the D140, we would follow these steps:

    • Turn the ignition key to the on position and wait for it to light up

    • Once the preheating (glow plug) lights go off start up the the engine using the ignition key

    • Run the machine for 5-10 minutes on tick over (low revs) to allow it to warm up

    • Fill the hopper with approximately 30 litres of water and a dash of washing up liquid

    • Connect the product hose to the pump outlet

    • Turn the pump rotation control switch to forward position with the speed at ¼ speed

    • Prime the hose by running water through it. Be sure to empty the hoses of water prior to pumping. This will ensure the screed is not watered down. .

    • Empty the leftover water in the hopper by opening the wash out bung

    • Pour your ready-mix from the truck directly into the hopper and off you go.

    • Use the flow rate dial on the control panel to adjust accordingly.

    Behind the Scenes Machine Mechanisms

Essentially when you use a liquid screed pump it is as simple as switching on the machine, pouring from the ready mix truck in the hopper, adjusting the flow rate and allowing the screed to pump through the hose to the desired level as set up on your levelling tripods. The machine really does the hard work for you, however there are some behind the scenes mechanics that enable your flow screed pump to work. The magic really lies in the rotor stator technology which is working away in the background. Rotors and stators are the mechanisms behind many of our machines. Product (mortar, plaster, grout, cement) is directed through the rotor and stator by a cardan shaft. The rotor (spiralled steel shaft) creates conveying chambers inside the rubber tubing that lines the inside of the stator (the stationery element of the device). The conveying chambers move in the direction of flow and create a continuous flow which pushes the material through the hose and out onto the surface. Different rotors and stators achieve varying speed and pressure results and should be selected depending on your material and aggregate size.

  2. Safety First: All You Need to Know About Remaining Safe Using a Flow Screed Pump
    31 January 2023

As with any kind of machine, it is important to take notice of the safety precautions to prevent accidents and injuries. With big diesel units such as our flow screed pumps, you should always refer to the specific user manual to ensure you are operating the machine safely. When machines are working under pressure and using highly flammable fuel, you must follow the safety guidelines carefully. Below we have put together some key information to ensure you remain safe whilst operating your flow screed pump.

    Learn More

    Ready, steady, go!

Before you hit that ‘go’ button or turn the ignition key, ensuring the correct and proper setup is incredibly important for the safe operation of your machine. Remember that anyone who comes into contact with the pump should have been briefed on the specific guidance from the user manual, that includes staff transporting, using and cleaning the machine. Use these steps as a guideline:

    • Always transport machines correctly using the appropriate handles and grips
    • Keep a clean and clear workspace, free from obstacles and debris that become tripping hazards
    • People not using the machine should remain clear
    • Ensure no flammable objects are close to the machine
    • Set up the machine on a level surface, making sure the jockey wheel (if fitted with one) is placed to stabilise the machine to avoid tipping
    • Inspect the product delivery hoses prior to use, looking for wear or damage that could lead to a hose blowing and causing injuries
    • Never walk on product delivery hoses or use them to manoeuvre the machine
    • Be clear of where the ‘emergency stop’ button is located

    Running your Pump

Once your machine is set up correctly, it is time to pump. When operating any machine, you should always wear appropriate PPE which includes safety glasses/googles, gloves, mask, overalls and safety boots. The following is some generic guidance on remaining safe whilst the pump is running:

    • Ensure your application is supported by the machine
    • Make sure there is at least 50 cm of clear space between equipment and obstacles so as not to block the air flow
    • Use an appropriate lubricant to prevent material sticking to working areas of the pump
    • Never run the machine if you have noticed problems
    • Never run the machine unattended
    • Do not touch warm surfaces or moving parts
    • Never insert your hand or another object inside the safety grill
    • Always switch off the machine when you stop for breaks and make sure the pressure is released before cleaning or adjusting the machine
    • Always remain alert whilst using machinery and never operate under the influence of alcohol or other substances that could affect your reaction speed

    After-Care

Machine maintenance is crucial to keep your pump operating at the optimum level as well keeping wear-parts in tiptop condition which in turn ensures the machine is working safely. Here are our top-tips for safety in machine after-care:

    • Clean after every use
    • Only use genuine spare parts
    • Grease the pump after use to avoid blockages which can cause damage
    • Never modify a machine or cut/dismantle safety components such as the safety grill
    • Always store in a clean and clear area

  3. The Secret Is Out! Get The Most Out Of Your Plastering Machine By Implementing a Cleaning Routine
    31 January 2023

Plastering Machines like the Euromair Minijet 80 or Minijet 120 will pay you back on your investment multiple times over. With benefits such as reduced manual labour, increased plastering speed, improved plaster consistency, less room for human error and greater uniformity across larger jobs, a plastering machine is a great option to investigate. For more information about how a plastering machine works, head here > To keep these machines working at optimum level, it’s vital to carry out regular machine maintenance and importantly, clean your machine properly. Follow our tips below for a happy and healthy machine.

    Talk To An Expert

    Squeaky Clean

It may seem obvious, but simply keeping up with a good thorough cleaning routine after each use will work wonders. A clean machine not only improves your company’s image but also keeps your machine, and in particular its wear-parts, in the best possible condition. Whilst plaster drying to a smooth, solid coating is exactly what you want on your walls, solid plaster is not ideal in your machine. Solidified plaster in hoses, around the rotor and stator or in the mixing chamber, can cause problems. Take a look at our guidance for cleaning your plastering machine.

    Step-By-Step Clean

The following guidance is based on our electric Euromair Minijet 80/120 but machines will vary so always refer to the specific guidelines in your machine user manual.

    • Remove the nozzle from the spray gun and place in a bucket of clean water
    • Open the spray gun to fully empty the hopper
    • Open the drain valve, thoroughly clean the hopper with water and liquid soap (e.g. fairy liquid), close the drain valve once clean
    • Remove the filter from it’s housing (if fitted) and clean it
    • Disconnect the product hose and run machine (around speed setting 3) for around 30 seconds to clean the pump (time can vary, but ensure clear water is passing through the rotor and stator)
    • Disconnect the spray gun from the product hose and place into a clean bucket of water
    • Place the sponge cleaning ball inside the hose and reconnect the hose to the machine
    • Run the machine again (speed setting 3) allowing the product and sponge ball to flow out
    • Repeat the process with the sponge ball until the water runs out clear (we recommend putting through the ball a minimum of twice)
    • Clean the spray gun and nozzle with a brush. When clean replace on the end of the hose
    • Open the drain valve to empty the remaining water and then close again
    • Fill the hopper with a little water combined with storage liquid (up to the level of the safety grill)
    • With the spray gun open, run the machine for 1 minute to allow the storage liquid to stay in the hose

Ta-da! There you have it. A super shiny machine that looks like new and should fire up quickly and efficiently for you next time you use and will generally prolong the life of your machine. There are many other reasons why machine maintenance is crucial including health and safety, reducing long-term costs and improving the finish of your plaster; read more here >

    Storage & Servicing & More

Whilst cleaning your machine properly really aids in prolonging the life of your machine, there are many other aspects of machine maintenance you should consider. Storing your machine correctly is crucial in keeping your machine working at its best. Once your machine is clean ensure it is sufficiently protected and check that there is still some water/storage fluid (fairy liquid will do the job) at the bottom of the hopper. Servicing your machines is also key in getting the most out of your machine. With a diesel machine, we would recommend getting a full service roughly every 150 hours. Electric machines are slightly different in terms of servicing and we would suggest an annual check before the spray season begins. This machine ‘health-check’ would include checking over water and air filters as well as ensuring the rotor and stator has plenty of life (pressure) left in it. Pre-use checks will also help extend the life of your machine; parts to check include:

    • The rotor and stator-is there enough pressure? You’ll know when it needs replacing as the pressure and speed will drop
    • Hoses and couplings-are they clean and in good condition? Worn or perished hoses can be dangerous and may split under pressure
    • Is there a consistent power source so that the machine will not trip out?

    December Update!
  9. Getting the most out of your Rendering and Plastering Machine
    8 December 2016

You have just bought a new or second hand Rendering and Plastering Machine and you’re ready to put it to work and start to earn you some money back. Before you start getting the machine spraying render or plaster it’s important to know a few tricks of the trade that we at CES Hire have picked up over the 30 plus years we have been hiring rendering and plastering machines…

    Daily Checks

Spending 5 to 10 minutes carrying out checks on your Rendering and Plastering machine spray equipment before you begin your spray, is a great way to maintain the performance of your render or plaster spray machine. This short check in the morning can also help spot any faults there may be with your equipment. We recommend checking the below…

    Electric Rendering or Plastering Machines

    • Water feed – Are you getting a consistent supply of water with good pressure? Make sure you are the only person using that particular water supply and no one is going to turn you supply off. Using a water butt is a good way of getting a consistent feed.
    • Water filter – Make sure it is clear and allowing water to pass through.
    • On 3 Phase machines make sure your Phases are the right way round – If not the machine will run backwards and not pump.
    • Good Power source available? – Make sure you have a good consistent power source that is dedicated to your machine and will not trip out. If the power keeps dropping out you could end up damaging your machine and its components.

    Diesel Rendering or Plastering Machines

    • Oils – Check your Engine, hydraulic and compressor oil levels.
    • Fuel level – It sounds obvious but make sure your machine is full of diesel. If your machine has a full tank of diesel at the start of the day then it should remove the potential stress and hassle of running out halfway through a spray. Remember they are classed as plant machinery so using Red Diesel is fine.
    • Engine coolant level – If it runs out of coolant your machine will over heat and cut out. This causes downtime and could result in costly repairs.
    • Grease points greased? – This ensures all the parts on the machine that are supposed to move can move freely and free from contamination, extending the life of your machine parts.

Some other bits of equipment to check on your rendering or plastering machine include…

Rotors and Stators – Is your rotor and stator providing enough pressure to transfer the material from the machine to the wall? If not it could be time to change it.

Hoses and couplings – are they clear and in good condition. Blocked hoses will not allow material to travel through to your spray gun. Perished or damaged delivery hoses can be dangerous as when under pressure they are more likely to split.

    Lubricating hoses prior to spraying

One way of increasing the life of your rotor and stator and your delivery hoses is to ensure they are lubricated prior to spraying. Lubricating your delivery hoses reduces the resistance created in the hose, therefore allowing the render or plaster to pass through the hoses a lot easier and taking some strain off the machine. You can lubricate your hoses in a few different ways…

    1. Pump pure cement through the hoses prior to spraying and walk it out.
    2. Pump a special hose primer through your hoses such a leyco slick and walk it out.
    3. Pour water down the hose and walk it out (Water is not the best of lubricants and should be used as a last resort)

Note: It is important to walk out your water or hose primer prior to spraying to ensure that the material you are spraying is consistent. Leaving water or cement in a hose will make it mix with your product you are spraying. This will see the finish product on the wall being either too wet or too cement rich and not to the clients spec. It can also wash out the goodness in the mix which will cause a blockage in your hoses.

    Keeping the machine clean

Not only will keeping your rendering or plastering machine clean improve your company’s image when you turn up to site, it will also keep it working well. Renders and plasters are designed to be strong when they dry and set. This is great when putting material on the wall but not as good when they set on or inside your machine. Dry material can cause hoses, mixing chambers and rotors and stators to block. Although these parts of the machine are known as wear parts, the can add unnecessary costs to your company. So you don’t want to be replacing them unless you really have to.

    Maintenance at regular intervals

It sounds quite obvious but you’ll be surprised at the amount of plastering or rendering machine owners who forget to maintain or service there machine until it’s too late. One vital part of the machine to look after is the Rotor and Stator. This is the unit on the machine that creates pressure to push your render or plaster down the delivery hoses and onto the wall. You will know when your rotor and stator is on the way out as it will begin to lose pressure. Some Rotors and Stators have ‘jackets’ you can fit to them to tighten the stator and get a little more life out of them. We always recommend keeping a spare rotor and stator in the van as a backup in case your rotor and stator dies on you. On an electric mixer pump a tell-tale sign of a worn rotor and stator is the material going wet, dry, wet, dry.

Diesel machines – On a diesel powered render machine we recommend a full service around every 150 hours (which includes a changing of Oils and filters). This is only a rough guide and one we use on a hire fleet. For a more accurate time scale you can refer to your machine service manual. You can carry out a service on your machine yourself or at a garage. If however you would like to get a diesel rendering machine expert to look at your machine we will be happy to help.

  12. Blog: Using Protection For Spraying Render and Plaster!
    15 September 2016

Using protection is vital when spraying render or plaster. If masking up (applying protection) when spraying plaster or render is done well then it can make the whole job go quicker, looking more professional and with minimal cleaning up afterwards. This saves you time and money!

Key areas that need to be protected when machine applying spray able renders include… windows, doors, Fascia boards, Soffits, gutters, downpipes, Areas of brick not to be rendered (eg brick window cills or plinths), Security lights, Vents, flues garage doors and patio doors.

Much like with rendering machines there are a few options for spray protection methods. Here at CES Hire we have been supplying protection to our painting, rendering and plastering customers for a fair few years now.

    Here’s a few options below…

    Speedy Mask

Available for indoor & outdoor usage and in a variety of ‘drops’ including 550mm, 1100mm, 1400mm and 2700mm. Speedy Mask is very popular for masking up.

windows, walls, doors and floors. It’s static film prevents most over sprayed material from dropping onto the floor. Outdoor Speedy Mask comes fitted with UV protective tape this means you can leave the mask in place for up to 3 weeks without any residue from the tape being left behind.

    Blue Window Protection Film

Our Window Protection Film is perfect for protecting windows whilst spraying renders, plasters or paints. The UV resistant feature makes it perfect for protecting windows from scratches and dirt, this means the product can be applied for up to 90 days without the adhesive being affected by sunlight and leaving no sticky residue on the window. It is also Self-adhesive, meaning you don’t need to apply a tape to secure the film in place. Our blue Glass Protection Film is available in 300mm or 500mm wide. Each roll has 100m of blue window protection film on it. Other applications included mirrors and glass furniture. Suitable for professional and domestic use.

    Scapa Red Polyflex Tape

Scapa Red Polyflex 234 PE tape is a premium, UV resistant tape for demanding masking. This makes it great for use with spray rendering. It’s very sticky stuff which is why Red Polyflex tape is widely regarded in the construction industry as a specialist high performance product with proven performance including superior adhesion, excellent durability and strength, ease of use and watertight sealing properties. If required this tape can be used with Blue Window Protection Film to secure it down.
