For audiences of 10 or more people we offer a complimentary lunchtime RIBA approved CPD presentation at your offices. The seminar identifies the primary reasons for using retaining structures and how cost and programme savings can be made by utilising the latest retaining wall and soil stabilisation techniques.

Permacrib Timber Crib Retaining Walls

Here at Phi Group, we have over 30 years experience in designing, supplying and installing Permacrib walls. Permacrib is our timber crib gravity retaining wall system, it uses timber header and stretcher components to create a 'timber cage' which is then filled with graded stone to create its mass.

Permacrib Timber Crib Retaining Walls have 8 different model sizes ranging from 600 mm to 1650 mm enabling us to provide the most economic structure possible. Permacrib retaining walls have been built up to 10 m in height using double or sometimes triple depth structures.

Andacrib Concrete Crib Retaining Walls

Andacrib Concrete Crib Retaining Walls is a cost effective alternative to traditional retaining wall systems.

A key benefit of this retaining wall system is the speed of installation. Thanks to the unique interlocking framework, the Andacrib system is a faster process and visually appealing compared to traditional retaining walls.

The durable concrete makes it the ideal choice for projects which require a robust retaining wall system. The Andacrib system has been widely used for highway and rail shemes.

Textomur Reinforced Soil Slopes

Typically installed at 60-70 degrees, Phi Group's Textomur Reinforced Soil Slopes are a cost effective soil slope solution. It is ideal on sites where levels are being raised and the re-use of site won material is being considered.

The Textomur system involves the installation of a sacrificial steel mesh formwork to the face of the reinforced slope. A geotextile placed to the inside face of the steel cage, this enables a layer of topsoil to be incorporated as a growing medium.

At the end of the slopes installation process, the Textomur Soil Slope system can be hand or hydraulically seeded to provide an aesthetically pleasing green finish. This can be achieved with slopes up to 65 degrees. Any gradients steeper than this are recommended to have a our stone filled Textomur option as an alternative.

45 Degree Reinforced Soil Slopes

To construct our soil slopes of up to 45 degrees, we supply and install a 'wraparound' structure. This solution doesn't require any facing, but instead uses a geogrid as a topsoil retention method. Our reinforced soil slope systems are very effective in the re-use of site won material making this a very cost-effective solution.

Gabion Retaining Walls & Architectural Cladding

Phi Group's Gabion Retaining Walls & Architectural Cladding are a very simple gravity retaining wall system which uses steel mesh cages filled with large angular rocks. The gabions are manufactured using welded steel mesh to offer a more rigid structure on the front face, to achieving a uniformed finish. The gabions can also be manufactured using woven wire. Depending on the finish, the design life of the gabions can vary from 50-120 years depending on the corrosion protection used and whether they have a PVC coated finish.

Gabions are used greatly in architectural cladding to buildings as well. We are very experienced doing this, having carried out various cladding projects. If required we would be very happy to advise you on your project.

Gabions themselves have a relatively low cost, however there is a large regional diversity in the costs regarding the 150-200 mm stone which is needed to fill up the steel gabions.

Vertical Reinforced Soil Structures

We can provide a range of different vertical reinforced soil structures here a Phi Group. We use a variety of of reinforcement types such as geogrid, steel ladders, steel strips or polyester straps. We have our own system, called Titan, which uses steel ladder reinforcement. However, thanks to our vast experience in in retaining wall construction, we can install other modular block or concrete panel faced reinforced soil systems.

We provide a range of different facing options for our reinforced soil structure. Our most common option used is the modular block facing. This typically has a 'split face' finish, which involves two blocks being cast together and split when cured. The benefits of this system include: immediately serviceable, requires no further facing as a reinforced concrete wall would need and it provides an aesthetically pleasing architectural finish.

Combined Geotechnical Soultions

Being a part of the Keller Group we can provide the complete geotechnical solution. At Phi Group, we often work under one contract supplying retaining walls, engineered slopes, piled foundations, ground improvements and King post walls. By only placing one order for several packages of work, means that the client or contractor can be secure in the knowledge that responsibility for the works rests with one company. Even better when that company is the largest independent geotechnical contractor in the world!

The Complete Solution

We pride ourselves on the quality of service we provide here at Phi Group. We carry this philosophy with us throughout the contract with us from pre-tender advice, tender submissions, all the way through to the work we carry out on site and any post construction work required.

As we can offer a wide range of solutions, we are not interested in just selling one specific type of retaining wall system. If reinforced soil is better suited than a permacrib wall system, we will suggest it. We will always provide you with the most safe, buildable and cost effective solution.

The Complete Solution

Retaining Structures

Retaining structures and reinforced soil systems vary in type, methodology and materials used. Concrete, timber, recycled plastics, geogrids and metal are all used for various systems. The construction methodology also varies from system to system. It is important to use a solution that offers the best whole life costs, which depends on buildability, ongoing maintenance and design life, among other things.

Soil Panel

Phi Group’s Soil Panel system can provide an excellent aesthetically pleasing facing to soil nailed slopes, whilst also offering protection of the soil nail components. Please contact us for more information on T: 01242 707600 E:  southern@phigroup.co.uk

Gabion Cladding

Gabions can be used to clad buildings or retaining walls that are not aesthetically pleasing, such as sheet piled walls. Typically thinner than a normal gabion wall would be, this method of cladding is very effective and becoming more popular. Free standing gabion walls can also be used as environmental or visual screens.
