Foam Engineering

Foam engineering is a very broad subject with far-reaching consequences in the world of packaging. We at Protechnic pride ourselves in the fact that we approach this subject with a solid engineering foundation. We have a full range of process machinery at our disposal from CNC machining centres, CNC water jet cutting, high-frequency CNC knife cutting, laser cutting and etching, die-cutting to name a few. Each process has its own particular merits but before we start a packaging design, we examine the properties of the product to be transported, explore the methods of transit and determine the loading that the product may endure during transit.

The main purpose of a packaging design must be to ensure that the products arrive at their destination in full working order and without damage, it is essential to establish how vulnerable a product is, this is often referred to as fragility measured in g, this is the amount of force applied as either shock or vibration that a product can sustain without damage. All products would have a fragility level and the ability of the packaging to attenuate the shock as a result of the transit method is critical to the design. Each method of transit, whether it be road, rail, sea or air, has its own signature in terms of shock and vibration and there will always be some compromise between shock – very low frequency, high amplitude and vibration – high frequency, low amplitude but, with sophisticated modelling software and the use of engineering foam products, it is possible to arrive at a solution that will ensure your products arrive at their destination in perfect condition time after time.

There is a vast range of engineering solutions to attenuate shock and vibration, if the design calls for a foam solution we are able to specify the type and grade of foam from both open and closed cell polyethylene to open cell polyester and polyurethane, we can also specify conductive, anti-static and flame-retardant foams. We are also able to specify multi colour foams, very useful from an aesthetics point of view but also in terms of utility, a high contrast colour, black against yellow, for example, gives an instant visual indication that an item is missing from the package, often used in tool control settings particularly in aerospace applications but also used in emergency service applications that can be operating in low light levels. There are circumstances where the combination of product weight, fragility and shock level preclude the use of an engineered foam solution and, in those circumstances, we are able to use shock and vibration rubber dampers, we have, on occasion, used spring and damper solutions for extreme applications.

We have a high level of expertise within our ‘in house’ CAD and engineering capability that allows us to fully engineer a solution for most applications but we are also able to draw on the knowledge of a wide range of industry experts for the most extreme applications. We are very happy to discuss any foam engineering application you may have.

Flight Cases

Protechnic have been manufacturing flight cases for over 35 years. Our innovative flight cases are designed and manufactured in our factory in the UK. Flight case is a term that was originally inspired by the rock and roll era of the 1950's in the USA and has remained virtually unchanged to this day. At the earliest stages of Protechnic we looked ate the established design with a view to reducing weight and increasing strength to meet the exacting demands of the MOD, Oil and Gas, Aerospace ans Scientific instrument industries.

To the untrained eye our cases look very similar to other flight cases but beneath the surface there are several unique features that make our cases stronger and lighter without a cost penalty . Our inhouse foam engineering capability allows us to design and manufacture flight cases to meet your exact requirements.

Nanuk Cases

Plasticase initially started manufacturing plastic cases in 1984 under the name of Resentel Ltd. A few years later, after the company’s ownership was restructured, Plasticase emerged with a clearer mission: design, engineer, and manufacture the highest quality injection molded plastic cases in the world. By initially establishing a parallel with the success and trend that had been created by Swatch (a brand of plastic watches made in Switzerland), our first product initiative made its debut as a fashion accessory and was sold as a cool “must-have” case for students and young adults through upscale department stores, trendy design shops, and fashion accessory boutiques.

Not long after the release of our first product, the 639 attaché case, the line grew to over 20 sizes and styles adapted to a wide variety of users with a clear focus on the needs of the B2B market. As the company evolved, demand for an innovative line of robust, waterproof cases became evident. Plasticase moved forward with a bold response: NANUK “The Evolution of Protection”—a complete line of waterproof and impact resistant protective cases rated for military, law enforcement and professional users.

With innovative features like the patented PowerClaw latch, the rugged NK-7 resin, and a distinct style, NANUK instantly earned global recognition while capturing significant international market share. NANUK professional protective cases are now distributed in over 50 countries worldwide.

Plasticase has the in-house ability to design and manufacture innovative custom solutions for companies that are looking for new ways of adding value to their products. Plasticase’s state of the art production facilities and multidisciplinary teams include specialists in thermoplastics engineering and tooling, industrial design, mold making, graphic design, and manufacturing.

B&W Cases

For decades now, the outdoor.cases produced by B&W International – the specialist case manufacturer based in Ibbenbüren, Germany – have been synonymous with security, stability and quality. Not only are they dustproof and waterproof, they are also able to withstand even significant impact – making them ideal for use in military environments. Already suitable for transporting high-value appliances, type 6000 cases are now also capable of carrying dangerous goods. This feature has been certified through extensive testing conducted by Germany’s Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM).

Known as 4H2, the new certification that the cases have earned is only awarded once a product has passed a range of type examination tests based on Chapter 6.1 of the ADR (European Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road). A case is subjected to various phases of testing in this process. Following the comprehensive type examination, its material properties are identified. The type 6000 case shell – made from high-quality polypropylene – and the automatic air pressure compensation valve proved the security and quality standards that this case delivers. These are features that are shared by other B&W International outdoor.cases too, including type 5500 and type 6800. After the properties of the type 6000 case had been analysed, the next stage involved a stacking test and a drop test, during which the case was cooled to a temperature of -20°C. The case was able to withstand a stacking load of 400 kilograms when lying flat – and it also emerged successfully from the drop test conducted in its frozen state, in which it was dropped in five positions from heights of up to 1.80 metres. Once the tests were complete, looking inside the case revealed that both the exterior and interior had remained intact – living up to the manufacturer’s mission statement.

Thanks to BAM having awarded them 4H2 certification, type 6000 cases are now suitable for military applications that involve handling dangerous goods on a day-to-day basis. This type of accreditation is required by the UN, and provides information about the type of dangerous goods packaging and its materials, whether it involves packaging group X (significant danger), Y (moderate danger) or Z (low danger), the gross weight that the packaging and contents must not exceed, the substance category, the year of manufacture, the country in which the certification was granted, the certifying body, the certification number, and the abbreviation denoting the manufacturer and testing institute.

Transit Cases

Protechnic have been manufacturing specialist cases in the UK for over 30 years and during that time have developed a number of unique products that are ideally suited for the safe protection of equipment in transit. Keith Judson MD takes up the story:

It takes a long time to build a company from a standing start and even longer to establish a reputation for quality and service, but I am proud to say that Protechnic has become one of the industry leaders in bespoke case design and manufacture. Much has changed since the inception of Protechnic some 30 years ago, but we still hold true to our values of continual development and improvement, one of our axioms is that 'you should not let your last good idea be your last good idea' and our expert team of engineers are always looking for ways to develop our products, and incorporate the latest materials technology, our design ethos is to make our cases stronger, lighter and more cost effective, always with a keen eye on what the customer needs.

In our quest for excellence we have such pioneering products as the Smart Case, Exo Case, Nio Case, MultiPad. The Exo Case, in particular, is a patented product and is truly ground-breaking in the world of transit cases and enclosures. The Case system is modular and very configurable allowing us to make cases to suit a vast range of applications, our 19” rack frame products are ideal for the safe protection of rack mounted equipment in transit. We take great pride in the quality and service, and accordingly we are ISO 9015 accredited, and we are fully committed to the concepts of continual improvement as enshrined in the latest ISO standard.

We know from experience that a successful company is not just about great products - it is about the ability to connect with and listen to the needs of our customers. Our bespoke design and finish service enables us to fully customise our solutions to match the technical requirements. It is testament to our customer service that we are still supplying some very long-standing customers from the early days of Protechnic.

Together with our bespoke products, we have a vast range of injection moulded, vacuum formed and roto moulded cases that enable us to offer the perfect solution across many industries including, oil and gas, aerospace, MOD, medical, automotive and many more, in fact just about any application that requires the safe transit of equipment. Our capability extends to foam engineering and, we are able to specify and design the case interior to suit the requirement, based on the fragility of the equipment to be housed and the shock/vibration characteristics of the application.

Our product designs are driven by our customers, from a simple transit case to very involved designs for transporting highly valuable and delicate equipment.  We treat every requirement with the same ideology – what would be the best solution for our customer. There are many drivers in a case design, it may be cost, strength, weight, protection, aesthetics, timescale and we operate in a very wide range of industries that bring their own particular demands, but our skilled team of design engineers will establish the essential criteria in sufficient detail to allow our estimators to offer the most competitive solution.
