Cold-formed steel (CFS) is the common term for products made by rolling or pressing thin gauges of sheet steel into goods. The working of sheet steel using stamping, rolling, or presses to deform the sheet into a usable product creates cold-formed steel goods. Cold worked steel products are commonly used in all areas of manufacturing of durable goods like appliances or automobiles but the phrase cold form steel is most prevalently used to describe construction materials.

A rivet is a permanent mechanical fastener. Before being installed, a rivet consists of a smooth cylindrical shaft with a head on one end. The end opposite the head is called the buck-tail. On installation the rivet is placed in a punched or drilled hole, and the tail is upset, or bucked (i.e., deformed), so that it expands to about 1.5 times the original shaft diameter, holding the rivet in place.
