Catalysts and Enzymes

A catalyst increases the rate of a chemical reaction, and an enzyme is a type of catalyst. With a catalyst, reactions occur faster because they require less activation energy. In fact, enzymes are known to catalyse more than 5,000 biochemical reaction types and are widely used in a variety of industries. A list of catalysts and enzymes are published under the following recognised industry databases; BRENDA, ExPASy, IntEnz, KEGG and MetaCyc. Catalysts and enzymes are used in the biofuel industry, biological detergent, brewing industry, culinary and dairy industry, apparel industry, food processing, molecular biology, paper industry, personal care, automotive industry and starch industry to name just a few.
