Lock Washers

Lock washers, or spring lock washers as they are sometimes known, are a type of washer that feature a ring that is split at one point and moulded into a helical shape. This shaping causes spring force to be exerted. This creates friction and a greater resistance to rotation. Lock washers come in various types. All are designed to prevent threaded fasteners from coming loose. They also prevent vibrations, with some featuring external teeth to further prevent rotations from occurring. Steel and stainless steel are the most common material types, but aluminium and silicon bronze are just two of the other materials that are sometimes used for lock washers. Alongside the conventional lock washer, with split lock washers, tooth lock washers and wedge lock washers also available in various thicknesses and diameters, lock washers can be used in an extensive range of applications. Aerospace and structural applications are two industries where they are commonly used.
