Sphygmomanometers

A sphygmomanometer is used to measure blood pressure. It is composed of an inflatable cuff which collapses and releases the artery to measure pressure. In more manual Sphygmomanometers this process is also done in conjunction with a stethoscope. Sphygmomanometers are also commonly known as blood pressure gauges, blood pressure monitors or blood pressure metres. Types of sphygmomanometers include manual sphygmomanometers, aneroid sphygmomanometers, aneroid sphygmomanometers and digital sphygmomanometers. Sphygmomanometers are used by medical practitioners including doctors, nurses, midwifes, and gynaecologists. They are commonly found in doctors’ surgeries, medical clinics, universities and hospitals, however many patients with abnormal blood pressure may have a home sphygmomanometer.
