Extrusion of Metals

Extrusion is one of the processes used to manufacture objects with a fixed cross-sectional profile. In this process, the material is pushed through a die of the desired cross-section shape. The main advantage of this process is its ability to work with very complicated cross sections and brittle materials. Drawing is a similar process to extrusion of metals, which uses the tensile strength of the material to pull it through the mould or die. Extrusion may be continuous where it produces indefinitely long material) or semi-continuous producing many pieces at once. Common products produced by extrusion of metals, includes wire, metal bar, tubes. Materials commonly used in the extrusion of metals include polymers, ceramics, concrete, play dough, and foodstuffs.
