Radiation Protection

Radiation protection is a way of protecting people from harmful exposure to ionising radiation. Ionising radiation is a very significant health hazard even though it is widely used in today's society. The strength of the exposure determines the extent of the damage with low levels increasing the risk of cancer and high exposures causing radiation sickness and skin burns. Different methods can be used to protect from radiation, the amount of time the individual is exposed can be reduced, the distance from the source of radiation can be increased and shields can be used to absorb or block the harmful rays. Shields can be made of different materials depending on the type and strength of rays that need to be stopped. Lead is a common material and is used in the form of lead aprons for things like x-rays. Very thick layers of concrete are used in nuclear reactors. Radiation is used in different industries such as medical, nuclear, construction, engineering and manufacturing. All of these industries will need to use radiation protection in order to protect their workforce.
