Spatulas
Spatulas are small implements with a variety of end configurations which are commonly used in laboratories. They are sturdy and also resistant to acids, bases, heat and solvents. They may be made of plastic or metal and can have riveted hardwood handles. Spatulas exist in a wide variety of lengths and widths; there are even micro spatulas designed for small quantities. Although some spatulas have a handle, some have double ends suitable for different work. They can combine a spoon for measuring, a tip for cutting or a knob for crushing. Some feature scrapper blades and the ends can be square or round in formation. Round-ending spatulas are especially suitable for work with test tubes. Stainless steel spatulas can be sterilised but polystrene types are disposable to prevent the risk of cross contamination. Spatulas are essential tools in any laboratory, whether they are research, industrial or educational. They are used to mix, spread, stir and lift materials including compounds and drugs. They can also transfer or apply powders and pastes like chemicals and treatments. Polystrene types are ideal for research and in handling lyophilised products or perfecting lyophilisation. Double-ended types with a tip and knob are necessary for cutting and crushing crystals.
