A spirometer is a piece of medical equipment that is used to measure the volume or air expired and inspired by the lungs. It works by measuring ventilation (the movement of air in and out of the lungs). Spirometers work to identify two key ventilation patterns; restrictive and obstructive. Types of spirometers include whole body plethysmograph, pneumotachometer, fully electronic spirometer, incentive spirometer, peak flow meter, windmill-type spirometer, and tilt-compensated spirometer. A spirometer is used diagnostics to help identify various lung diseases like asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema and can also measure progress in the treatment of known diseases. They are used by doctors, nurses and lung specialists.
