Hobbing
Hobbing is a process used in machining that is typically undertaken to cut sprockets, gears and splines. It involves the use of a machine known as a hobbing machine or hob. Depending on the type of end product, different types of hobs are used. These include Spline hobs, Chamfer hobs, Worm wheel hobs, Straight side spline jobs, Serration hobs, Involute spline hobs, Semi topping gear hobs and Spur and helical gear hobs. Hobbing is most often used in manufacturing to create helical and spur gears. In fact, hobbing is the most common type of gear making process and used across a wide range of industries including marine, automotive and watch making.
