MIG Welding
MIG welding stands for metal inert gas and it is a welding process where an electric arc forms between a consumable wire electrode and a piece of workpiece metal. This wire electrode heats the workpiece metal, which causes them to melt and join. MIG welding is also referred to as gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and metal active gas welding (MAG) and, in each case, there are four primary methods of metal transfer. These four methods are globular, short-circuiting, spray, and pulsed-spray. Each of these methods has advantages and limitations depending on the purpose and materials. The process was originally developed for welding aluminium but is now applied to stainless and carbon steels. Because of this, MIG welding is popular in the automatic, military and aerospace industry. MIG also lends itself well to many home operations, either for hobby or repair, because it is easy to learn and operate.
