  12. Innovative polymer composite enhances safety for PCap touch display solutions
    17 August 2022

    Versatile, thin, lightweight, and durable

Westerham, United Kingdom, 16th August 2022. Display solutions and embedded systems provider, Review Display Systems (RDS) has announced the introduction of a new material technology for use with PCap (projected capacitive) touchscreens from leading touch solutions manufacturer AMT. The AMT Polym Touch solution uses a new polymer composite material as the top cover lens to enhance the protection of the PCap touch substrate and significantly improve the ability to withstand impact forces.

For impact resistant PCap touch solutions, thick glass cover lenses are often used. Health and safety regulations dictate that equipment and production machinery used within the food industry, and public information terminals and kiosks, must avoid the use of glass materials in touch-based systems. The weight of the glass cover increases significantly as the size of the product increases. In contrast, AMT Polym Touch uses a polymer composite for the cover lens, which is only half the weight of glass of the equivalent size.

The implementation of a polymer composite cover lens enables the complete PCap touch solution to be thin, lightweight, and exceptionally durable with significantly improved impact resistance while still meeting the requirements of the IK10 drop ball test rating (equivalent to a 5kg mass dropped from 400mm above the impact surface).

Justin Coleman, display business manager, RDS said, “AMT’s composite polymer PCap solution provides excellent impact resistance and is suitable for small and medium-sized products that need to be lightweight, rugged, and able to meet industry standard drop test specifications. AMT are constantly improving and developing the functionality, flexibility, and reliability of their PCap touch solutions. The new Polym Touch cover lens solution offers greater scope and versatility for new PCap touch designs.”

The composite polymer material also features anti-UV properties and meets the ASTM G154-Cycle 1QUV 1000 hours standard for measuring accelerated outdoor weathering conditions. Polym Touch is therefore able to withstand UV ray damage without any additional processing. An operating temperature range of -30° to +60° is supported.

The polymer composite material can be applied to a diverse range of AMT PCap designs and offers support for a wide range of touch controllers including PenMount P2 series (Microchip IC), PenMount K1 series (ILITEK IC), and AE series (EETI IC) touch controllers.

AMT Polym Touch is now available from Review Display Systems for PCap touch panels up to 15-inch display diagonal with 362mm (l) x 216mm (w) mechanical outline dimensions. Cover lens thicknesses of 1.0mm, 1.5mm and 2.0mm are supported.

    6.5” VGA display expands Tianma P-series line-up

Westerham, United Kingdom, 15 February 2022. Display solutions and embedded systems provider, Review Display Systems (RDS) has announced the availability of a new Tianma 6.5-inch TFT display module. The P0650VGF1MA00 features SFT (Super Fine TFT) technology which ensures exceptional optical performance, a 4:3 classic aspect ratio and VGA (640 x 480 pixels) resolution. Tianma P-series displays are designed to provide reliable and consistent operation when subjected to temperature extremes, vibration, and mechanical shock in challenging operating environments.

Wide viewing angle performance, consistent colour and brightness are key features of the P0650VGF1MA00 with Tianma’s implementation of SFT technology. Wide viewing angles of 85 degrees are supported in all directions (up/down, left/right). The white LED backlight has a 100K hour half-brightness lifetime and provides a 1200cd/m² brightness specification. A contrast ratio of 900:1 ensures that display images are bright, concise, and uniform.

Justin Coleman, display division manager, RDS said, "The new 6.5-inch P-series display should prove to be a popular addition to the Tianma display portfolio. The compact size, resolution and aspect ratio of the display combined with the excellent optical characteristics, deliver a highly versatile display module that will find use in many different applications and environments."

    The P0650VGF1MA00 features a single-channel 20-pin LVDS data interface which supports a configurable 6-bit or 8-bit RGB colour data which enables a colour palette of up to 262K or 16.7M colours. The 6.5-inch display module has mechanical outline dimensions of 154.0mm (w) x 121.0mm (h) x 7.1mm (d) and an active display area of 132.5mm (w) x 99.4mm (h).

The Tianma 6.5" TFT has been designed to function reliably under rigorous operating conditions found in many industrial, marine, aerospace, and medical applications yet still provide exceptional optical performance. Support for operation in harsh environments is aided with an extended temperature range of -30°C to +80°C.

Typical applications for the new 6.5-inch Rugged+ display include medical devices, marine instrumentation, industrial process control, and in-vehicle systems. The Tianma 6.5-inch P-series P0650VGF1MA00 TFT display module is now available from Review Display Systems.
