Internal Spur Gears
Conventional external gears feature teeth on the surface to the outside of a cylindrical or conical component. Internal spur gears do the opposite. They are comprised of teeth formed on the inside surface of a cone or cylinder. Internal spur gears prevent directional movement being reversed. The teeth cut on the internal surface mesh with the spur gears. Internal spur gears are popular as internal helical gears are expensive to produce. Technical processes such as skiving and gear grinding enable to precision of internal spur gears to be higher. Internal spur gears are commonly used in planetary gear drives and applications that involve gear couplings. Many variations of the ratios of speed transmission and rotational direction are possible with internal spur gears.
