Spur Gears
Spur gears are the most common type of gear. They feature straight teeth and sit parallel to a wheel axis. The contact that the teeth make in motion is primarily a rolling action and sliding occurs when the gears are engaged and disengaged. Spur gears force radial loads onto bearings without any end thrust occurring. Spur gears have many advantages as they have a simple design and low maintenance concerns. They can be noisy, especially at high speeds. Where parallel shafts are connected by gears, they are known as spur gears. Rack and pinion gears are a variation of spur gears, being linear shaped versions. Due to their ease of use, spur gears are the most widely used type of gearing system used in machinery and a wide range of applications. Spur gears are slow speed gears that are excellent for applications of moderate speed, but they become very noisy at faster speeds.
