Ophthalmoscopes

An ophthalmoscope is an instrument used to perform an ophthalmoscopy, which is a test that allows a professional to see into parts of the eye to determine the health of the optic disc, retina, and vitreous humor. An ophthalmoscope has a light source and a magnifying tool. Two common types of ophthalmoscopes include an indirect ophthalmoscope and a direct ophthalmoscope. An indirect ophthalmoscope is a tool about the size of a small flashlight, whereas a direct ophthalmoscope has a larger lamp, often attached to a headband. Ophthalmoscopes are used as part of a routine eye examination by opticians and ophthalmologists and other eye specialists.
