A router is a networking device that forwards data between computer networks. Think of routers as the controllers of traffic, directing all the functions on the internet. Data is broken down into packages, and its routers that forward it from one router to another until it reaches its destination node. For home and small business, the most simply type of routers pass information packets between computer and Internet – an example of this is the home cable or DSL router (which connects via the ISP). More sophisticated routers are enterprise routers, which connect large businesses and core routers that forward data and high speeds along optical fibres. Routers are a fundamental part of the telecommunications industry and are used in every industry that requires data transfer, including business as well as pleasure.
