Teleprinters

A teleprinter is an electric typewriter that can send and receive typed messages from one point to anther or from one point to multi-points over lots of communication channels. Before the electronic computer there was the Teleprinter or teletypewriter, Teletype or TTY and they were used to transmit and receive printed messages and data via telephone cables or radio relay systems. The teleprinter was almost made obsolete by many of advancements in telecommunications including fax, the PC, the printer, broadband and the World Wide Web but still exists in some industries today. They are still widely available in the aviation industry and a variation of the teleprinter exists is Telecommunications Device for the Deaf used for typed communications over ordinary telephone lines.
