Electrical Building Services Engineers

To ensure a building is fit for intended use, many features and services need to be designed, installed and maintained. These will usually include aspects such as electrical power and supply, lighting and heating systems. Electrical building services engineers are responsible for designing and overseeing delivery of the electrical aspects of new or renovated buildings. The comfort of a building is essential for its users. Health and safety measures must also be taken into account, but increasingly there is a growing focus on the environmental sustainability and cost effectiveness of buildings. Electrical building services engineers are therefore expected to specialise in the design and development of both safe and energy sustainable electrical systems in buildings. In addition to building services engineering qualifications, professionals may therefore also seek BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) certification as well as CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) Low Carbon Consultants and Low Carbon Energy Assessors (LCEA) status. Electrical building services engineers work in close partnership with other construction professionals, including architects, structural engineers and quantity surveyors, from design to delivery and ongoing maintenance. They may design, install and maintain services for new homes, commercial and public buildings or across large-scale developments.
