Beam Couplings

Beam couplings are also known as helical couplings. A beam coupling is a flexible coupling that is capable of transmitting torque between two shafts. The real advantage is that beam couplings enable misalignment and parallel offset to occur, as well as a degree of axial motion. The design of beam couplings uses just a single piece of material. Unlike some multi-piece couplings that can experience backlash, the flexibility of the single piece beam design prevents this happening with a beam coupling. Beam couplings come in various materials to affect performance and suitability for specific applications in different industries. The most common materials used in beam couplings are stainless steel and aluminium alloy. However, beam couplings can be constructed from a wide variety of materials, including titanium. As adjustments can be made to the helical beam lead, the misalignment range and torque capacity can be altered to adapt to a large number of applications. Beam couplings are most commonly found in the medical and food industries as well as in aerospace applications and robotics.
